Slow Internet

Alright, so I've already browsed through this forum for a solution as to why Fedora Core 3 is giving me a poor transfer rate over my dialup modem. Internet connections seem to be a bit of a problem for everyone, so hopefully someone will be able to figure this out.

I've disabled the IVP6 module, that increased the DNS lookup quite well. Yet, no matter what browser I use or which GUI (yes, even KDE; KDE is actually worse for me) I use, I still get my transfer rate cut in half. The good news is that it's all sites, even my ISP's default sites on their servers that should, in theory, pop up right away.

I've attempted pinging multiple servers arpund the US from terminals, and get time out notices for all of them. Of course the browsers are eventually able to connect to the sites.

Thankfully, I have a laptop connected to the same line, so I'm able to bring up the internet on that machine with windows for troubleshooting. I know dialup is slow... but not this slow! hehe :P

Tech specs:
Driver: http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hcf/
(127a,14f1)1025,1085, 2005)
Baud: 115200

Last though, could this be a PCI latency problem?

Thanks all!

have you tried changing the actural connection speed via the tool you connect to the net with. When I eas using dial up via a serial modem if i put it as the maximum connection speed 56k then then it would be extremely slow lowering the connection speed made it run much faster

Well, it's not set at the highest speed, just what it would normally be set at if in a Windows environment. Though, seeing as this is NOT Windows, perhaps I should try this.

Sadly, this didn't work for me. I tried every port speed setting, and it just didn't work. I tried it in KDE and the default GNOME GUI, and it's still running under 2 Kb/sec. The best I've gotten is 3.2 Kb/sec.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. I think I'll play around with some of the PPP settings. I have a feeling it'll be a while till I get the bugs worked out. Either that or just wait for our area to get fiber optics installed for DSL.

Which device is your modem set as? I had the exact same problem before switching it from ttyS3 to ttyS4.

well...

I was told to set it to dev/ttySHCF0 by the driver installation manual. Though, I can set it to dev/modem. Those are the only two that work. If I choose a different dev/ location, it'll give me error 2. I mean... it works... just not the greatest.
