i'm wondering how to set up ssh on my linux box (redhat 7.1). i tried running ssh-keygen but it didn't seem to work, unless i didn't do it right - i typed the command, ssh-keygen, typed in a password after the key was generated, and tried to access the box from another computer, only to get "secure connection refused." i can't telnet, rsh, or rlogin into my system either. what am i doing wrong? what else should i do?
ssh-keygen is for making a user identity, u add it to the remote authorization file so u get authenticated with that key when u login into ure box.
what u need is the ssh service (sshd) installed & running on ure box. get it off the installer cd's, ure distro's ftp mirrors, freshmeat or rpmfind.net.
*telnet, rsh and rlogin are really insecure ways to access ure box from a remote account, dont use em.
issue "whereis sshd" and itll tel ya the location of the binaries (prolly /usr/bin), man pages and configs(/etc/ssh)
if its running in stand-alone mode on startup u gotta check ure startup scripts, else look at /etc/(x)inetd.conf if its specified and not commented out.
else try a manual start like
"/etc/rc.d/rc.init.d/sshd start", then "/etc/rc.d/rc.init.d/sshd status" to see the PID (know process is running) else look in the sshd_config defined logfile for errors.
