Setting up ssh

I want to set up ssh on Linux so that I can remotely connect and show it off from school. (can I access X from there once it's set up, too?) Anyway, I have my network forwarding to my computer when port 22 is connected, now what do I do?

you'd probably want to get SSH access working, and then use x11vnc to export an existing X server. then use ssh to tunnel port 5901 through to your local system. then connect to 5901 using a vnc viewer.

that's just one way of course... many others....

well that is how you do it really... it's a case of building things up. assuming your school is using windows, putty will do all the forwarding for you no problem.

Thanks everyone, it is now working! I'm at school right now, and my computer is openn in another window.

Now, the question I have is how do I use X from here, or is it at all possible.

Here's the error I got when I tried to connect and use startx.

[simon@localhost simon]$ startx

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
at http://wiki.X.Org
for help.

[simon@localhost simon]$

You need to set up your display manager (xdm, kdm or gdm) and your font server on your linux server to allow you to connect via xterm from a remote connection. I'll include a link to a very basic howto which can point to more sophisticated howto on the subject.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/XDMCP-HOWTO/

That site contains the instructions on how to set up the X server for normal unsecure operation. I believe it has a link which will point you to the howto on securing the server.

THanks for that.

Just something that I'm wondering, what are these exceed and himmingbird things, and how do I set them up? Also, is there a wqay that I can make everything start at once instead of running everything in X by typing commands?

exceed and humming bird are X-windows emulators for MS Window's operating systems. They tend to be very pricey. Another one is Reflections X which also has some useful character based console emulations. But it's all a matter of personal taste. They can be very useful for testing your xwindows server setups as they are the client which attaches to the xwindows server.
