Jan 24 16:12:29 maillists sendmail[19269]: h0OGCSve019269: SYSERR(uucp): Too many hops 27 (25 max): from uucp@maillists.cfbt.\
com via localhost, to uucp@maillists.cfbt.com
Well every packet that gets sent out has a maxmimum number of hops it can travel before it dies. This is done to prevent packets getting caught in routing loops and going on forever.
Can you ping that server from your box? If so how many hops does it report then?
I'll admit that I've been terrible in describing my problem.
I've installed a mailman server at work, for use with groups of specialist teachers. This is the box that has sendmail on it. However, it is behind a firewall (which, I'm not responsible for, but have been assured that port 25 is open). So, when I use the box (pine) to send mail to another of my addresses, this is the error that I get in /var/log/mail/errors.
I had this problem as well. Checked to make sure the cw configuration wasn't creating a loop. It checked okay. Next checked MaxHopCount setting in sendmail.cf. Reset it to 28. Still had problems.
Went back into sendmail.cf. Found another MaxHop setting near the end of the sendmail.cf in the PROCMAIL section. Set it to 28
