RPM Hell

I am finding RPM to be challenging. There are always dependency issues whenever I go to upgrade. I've tried upgrading Mozilla 1.2.1 to 1.3. Also tried MySQL 3.23 to 4.1. Both were challenging.

Any advice or good quick reads for how to handle the various issues that arise?

For example, do I need to rpm -u the old stuff before I rpm -i the new stuff? Or should the install of a newer product version handle that? I tried uninstalling mySQL 3.23 with the graphical package manager and it uninstalled but then when I tried to put it back, it said that it could not find the package.

Thanks for any advice.

Scott

It is rpm -U (not -u) if you want to upgrade. Try
rpm -Uhv mozilla*.rpm
and this will upgrade existing packages. If you want a clean installation try first
rpm -e mozilla (this will remove old version mozilla)
and then
rpm -hiv mozilla...(something).............rpm
All this as root, of course, and you would better not use graphical package managers.

Thanks. I have been using it, but I always tend to get stuck with dependency issues..... Appreciate the help.

I tried Red Carpet today, but it won't install with RedHat 9 as I have a newer version of RPM that it doesn't seem to support. I was bummed. Thanks!
