Arrow Resolution changing problem

Hi,

I am trying out a new distro called JAMD and it is based upon Red Hat (Shrike) though i have had this problem with other Linux distros as well.

I want to change my resolution from the measly 800x600 that the setup let me choose to something a little more manageable on my 17" monitor, something like 1152x864 (thats what i run on the same computer in windows). My graphics adapter is the onboard Intel810 and it runs this resolution in windows.

However, my problme is that I can goto "Display Settings" in KDE and change the resolution, and click OK and it says that it has saved the change in settings to the XF86Config file (i think thats what it says) and that I have to close X and restart it. Now, I just reboot... should I do that or should i close X? If so, how do I do that (do I change run level??)

This is really bugging me as most of the other stuff works fine, just this little niggle, it irritating surfing the web with text about 2cm high

Rebooting would be sufficient. (have you tried this - does the resolution change as required?)

What does it currently say in your modes line in the screen section in /etc/X11/XF86Config file? - if your modes are currently

Modes "800x600" "640x480"

try putting "1152x864"

as the first entry in all of your mode lines - ie change them all to

Modes "1152x864" "800x600" "640x480"

to get access to the file

open a shell - su to root user then

gedit /etc/X11/XF86Config

when it opens up scan down to the bottom area and make the changes then save the file - reboot your computer and see what happens
