removing files in /tmp


can i remove all files in /tmp
#rm -rf /tmp/*.*

*.* --- U need that in windoze
linux likes *
only check if you have any screens active or detached

I'd be careful. As a rank newbie I removed all /tmp files in Mandrake 7.1, and the X font server stopped working. Why, I don't know. You'd think that fles in /tmp should be just that, temporary... My rule now is, if I don't know what it does, leave it alone.

my friend also experienced same problem. ie why i asked this. after he removed all his files in /tmp. he could not startx x-window. and later he reinstalled linux box
