I bought a RedHat 5.2 box back in 1997. No way was I going to try downloading in on a 28.8K modem that never connected over 23K.
There's a Mandrake box sitting right next to the RedHat box on the shelf at Best Buy. I didn't look, but I'm guessing there was a price tag on it, too.
A LOT of OSes already charge. You buy a nice box, you save downloading time, you support your favorite Linux distro and you get a bunch of extras. What's wrong with that?
Especially when (again for a lot of OSes) you can still go online, download it yourself. If you like the distro you're with and it does what you need it to do...why switch?
After briefly messing with Linux over the past few months and giving up, I finally put my foot down last week and swore I was going to learn it. I downloaded Mandrake 9.1 after having tried Red Hat, SuSE and even Lindows previously. I dunno, but to me it seems like everything came together perfectly. It detected all my hardware, comes with what appears to be a ton of software, and even has MP3 and DivX support out of the box. I was extremely impressed.
It was a free download, but I do plan on purchasing a retail box next time I'm at Best Buy.
