I have installed RH9 on a 1u server that doesn't have a video card or anything much else for that matter. I want this server to run using only a remote console. I found a doc entitled "Remote Serial Console" from aarnet which has given me some help, but I'm still having problems with it.

In the LILO.conf I've made the following mods:

append="mem=1024 console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600n8"

Also in the inittab I've configured mingetty with the following:

co:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttyS0 CON9600 vt102

The problem:

The server seems to at least start the process of booting, however
once I seen the message on the serial console "Loading Linux" I start
seeing garbage and the server seems to halt at this point.

I've removed the drive and put it into a server that has a monitor attached and I see a message saying the server panicked and halts.

The question:

Has anyone ever set this up successfully on a small server @256MB ram
and no video card??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

where does this panic occur?

i'd suggest not worrying about all that console stuff... why not just ssh into the box? if you want to go can push further for the pure hardware remote terminal, but i'd get the server actually running first before then.

Can't really see where the server panics, I guess I can check the system logs. But the real problem is getting the darn thing to boot when it's attached to the server when no video card.

I made a backup of the original lilo.conf and inittab to a floppy to boot from a serve with a video card and such. I I can boot it with it with that.

Additionally I do want to access this server from a remote location so the SSH is where I'm heading, but I need to thing to boot up properly first.
