Process UID Question

I've got a basic Debian install on my machine. When I type the command "ps -ef" I get a list of processes. Among the UIDs listed are "daemon," "message," and "Debian-." None of these are the root user and none are users that I have configured. What are they? Where did they come from?

They are users setup by the system on install.

There are many things you want to have running on your system at all times to do various tasks but that you don't want running as root (for security reasons).
