Problem with mail command

Hello,

I am facing a weird problem with mail command.
I need to send data present in a file say 1.txt to a email address and now when i give the following command,

cat 1.txt | mail -s "HellO" abc@www.com

sometimes i get the mail with the text as part of the mail itself. I mean the text is present in the body of the mail.

And Sometimes iam getting the mail as an attachment , something like Hello.dat. when i open this dat file iam able to see the original message.

Can someone tell me why such weird things happen with mail command .

~Srihari.

I am always using the same client... I haven't changed any of my mail settings.

Can you suggest any other method where i get the mail without the attachment ?. I need the text present in 1.txt to be part of the mail body ...
