Problem in the Booting

Hello Everyone

I have Fedora Core 1 installed on my system.

When the system is up and running, i browse

RedHat -> SystemTools -> Info Centre

There in the Processor Information, the processor is displayed as

Pentium lll (Coppermine)

I downloaded latest kernel 2.6.xxxx and tried to compile it.

Here i selected the processor as Pentium lll (Coppermine).

The kernel compiled successfully.

I made a diff partition and made filesystem on that for the new kernel.

I use GRUB as Loader.

I added an entry into the configuration file

title NewLinux
root (hd0,5) // This is my boot partition
kernel /newlinux ro root=/dev/hdc9 // This is the new partition for this kernel.

But when i try to boot, the kernel stops after CPU detection.

I think there is some problem with the options i select for the cpu.

I tried by selectingh and deselecting math emulator.

Can someoe suggest me how to get out of this thing.

Take Care

Jasmeet

first tell what is kernal version u r using in fedora 1. probably it will be before 2.6.xxx. to update ur kernal a lot of pacages also have 2 update. bcoz kernal associates a lot of pacages so it's not a wise step 2 change kernal version. if u r already using 2.6.xxx, then only u can update latest release of version 2.6.xxx. bcoz it did not requir that much dependcies.

If you have yum installed with FC1, then updating is generally a snap.

The easiest method is to open a terminal window and logon as administrator.

Next, type in "yum check-update".

Depending on what repositories you have, yum will proceed to list all packages, including your kernel, which can be updated.

To update selected packages, type "yum update <package name> or...

To update all packages, type "yum update".

Yum will ask you to verify all packages you selected before doing any update.

Yum is great because it generall will resolve any dependicies for you.

For more info, check out
Managing Software with Yum .
