Pine: Deferred: Connection refused ....

hi all!!
me again....i've just installed linux redhat 7.1 for a friend of mine...she meant to use it as a webserver...the prob is, even though she could send emails out (using ipop3d), when i tried to send an email to her using my sunOS 5.7 machine, several hours later i got this message in pine:

----- The following addresses had transient non-fatal errors -----
heremail@bonggo.kym.edu.my

----- Transcript of session follows -----
heremail@bonggo.kym.edu.my... Deferred: Connection refused by
bonggo.kym.edu.my.
Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours
Will keep trying until message is 5 days old

--------------------------------------------------

What is the cause of this? She COULD send an email to me though...what could have caused the refused connection?? And the same thing happened with ftp..i tried to ftp to her machine, but i got

ftp:connect:Connection refused

Have i left something out when i set up her machine?

THANKS!!

It doesn't sound like Sendmail on her machine is setup it accept incomming connections, or is firewalled so you can't reach it. If her email came out from username@machine.domain.net then your return mail will attempt to be relayed directly to her Linux box.

As for the FTP problems - check that the FTP daemon is running and check any firewalling rules that are setup.

HTH

perhaps the response by raz in this thread will help:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...?threadid=4993

i had major problems before and couldn't receive incoming emails either while outgoing email worked fine. it was because sendmail was only listening on localhost (127.0.0.1). it should be working for the user's IP address (whatever inet address listed in eth0 when you run /sbin/ifconfig) instead.

as for FTP -

try typing:

$ rpm -q wu-ftpd

if that's not installed, you can get it at speakeasy.rpmfind.net

if it is installed, go to /etc/xinet.d/ and see what is listed there. wu-ftpd should be there, and you will need to check that disable is set to "no."

then check your /etc/hosts.allow and hosts.deny files. for security, hosts.deny should probably just say ALL : ALL. if that's the case, check the hosts.allow file to ensure that the following line is there:

in.ftpd : ALL

where ALL can be "ALL" or any specified IP addresses (there are many ways to configure this).

then you can just run /sbin/service xinetd restart as root and see if that fixes the problem.

hope that helps.

thanks punt and jamie!!
i've tried what you suggested, but it didnt work! grr!! same thing with telnet and ftp!! ...
a stupid thought just occured to me a moment ago...i did installed linux redhat 7.1 as GNOME workstation (a mistake, really,i meant to install it as server)...does that effect all the services (ftp, telnet, email)?? if it does, i'm going to kill myself, simply for the embarassement of my own stupidity. :P

well??

hmm. it shouldn't; i believe i've configured a workstation in the past to do server tasks and it worked fine. what do your hosts.allow and hosts.deny files look like?

you need to ensure that the programs in /etc/xinet.d/ (that you wish to use) are all set to disable=no.

by the way, did you get email working?
