Path?

I have two questions:

#1 How can I add a directory to the path?
#2 Can someone give me a good explanation or a link about how "Path" works and what it does?

Thanks
M.S.

for clarity:

when you initialize a variable, the '$' is omitted ie:
prompt> foo='bar'
when you reference it the '$' is required ie:
prompt> echo $foo
bar
