panel question...

First i want you to look at this pic.

My Q is, why is there so many blank/free space? i can't resize it to reduce the lenght, and right clicking on that blank space don't show anything. From time to time i see some icon with some keys there but like i said... that's ONLY from time to time.

I'm logged in as root, using RH8.

First, I have a question for you? Do you normally run as root?

And I can't quite tell from the picture is that gnome? If so you should be able to right click in the middle of the panel and see a menu to change the panel settings.

Can you not right-click on the icon to the left (the two red lights) and select 'move' then slide it to the right? And then do the same for the speaker?

You say that sometimes something appears in the 'blank' space. Perhaps its an app that uses a grey/transparent icon when not needing to display anything. Perhaps you could right click on the 'blank' space and 'remove' whatever populates that bit?
