Oh frell. Any way to save this insall after kdeinit error?

Last time I encountered the "Could not start kdeinit, please check installation" error, I logged out of my home directory to see if it was affecting root. I never got beyond there as my screen flickered constantly until I was forced a reinstall.

Now I'm in root and the problem is there. Does anyone know what I can do to save this install and not have to spend half a day installing, configuring and customizing?

I'll take anything....please?

Boot into text mode? This would be done by typing "Linux 3" or whatever your Linux is listed as, followed by a 3, at a Lilo prompt. Not sure about GRUB.
