Mysql is not the issue here; Mysql works fine;
The issue is a ./configure that cannot find a library element that exists, even with a config parameter telling it where the module is, This is explained in my first post.

The majority of my trouble with this involved management (actually mismanagement) of environment variables and permissions

Thanks, Gary, that does seem likely. Any suggestions as to which env variables it might be? I am compiling as root, so it shouldn't be permissions.

/Check this thread --- especially the posts by lumak,gnashley and astrogeek --- they pretty much explain what was causing my problems.
