no space left on device

Op System: REDHAT LINUX ENTERPRISE ES 5

This issue has come up when i tried to extend the /tmp volume using lvm.

lvm> lvextend -L5GB /dev/VolGroup_ID_21853/LogVol2
Extending logical volume LogVol2 to 5GB
/etc/lvm/backup/VolGroup_ID_21853.tmp:fclose failed:No space left on device
Backup of volume group VolGroup_ID_21853 metadata failed
Logical Volume LogVol2 successfully resized.

So according to lvdisplay the logical volume has been resized. But when i browse to the /tmp folder, right click and check properties, the available space has not changed as if the volume was never resized. Has this got something to do with the 'no space left on device' error?

Is the error telling me i have no space left on /etc/ ? Can i confirm this? And if this is the case how can i resize /etc/ so it has more space.
