no DMA with new kernel 2.6.17

Hi all

Just did a complile of the 2.6.17 kernel (running slack 10.2) with the (i think) appropriate options, but now DMA on the hda is not working.
I've got a
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801BA IDE U100 (rev 11)
according to lspci

for this i compiled the Intel PIIXn into the kernel

dmesg is returning:
Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
Probing IDE interface ide0...
hda: Maxtor 6L250R0, ATA DISK drive
Probing IDE interface ide1...
hdc: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: max request size: 512KiB
hda: 490234752 sectors (251000 MB) w/16384KiB Cache, CHS=30515/255/63
hda: cache flushes supported
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3
hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache

hdparm -d1 /dev/hda is giving me operation not permitted
hdparm -tT returns:
Timing cached reads: 400 MB in 2.02 seconds = 198.28 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 10 MB in 3.80 seconds = 2.63 MB/sec

Can anybody enlighten me where I've gone wrong? Some tips perhaps?
Thanks in advance
Peter

Double check and make sure it is enabled in the kernel. Also be sure that no extra boot options are getting in the way. ide=nodma is one that would disable it. If all else fails you could try using an even newer kernel. I assume that you were using 2.6.17.0 since you didn't specify the last version number. Maybe try 2.6.17.8. See if you have any better luck.
