New kernel, less modules

I compiled a new kernel (to support my southbridge), and while I was doing it, I compiled in SCSI support (instead of loading it as a module).

Now, when I boot up, I get a string of "Unresolved symbols," in reference to the aic7xxx driver. What's weird is, it refers to:
/lib/aic7xxx.o
... but all the modules are in /lib/modules/kernel-ver/ and deeper. It refers to a bunch of specific tags within the module, so it seems to have found _something_. (There is no /lib/aic7xxx.o)

dmesg shows nothing about this, otherwise I'd paste it in.

SCSI support does indeed seem to have been compiled in correctly, as I can access my drives fine, and "lsmod" shows nothing about SCSI.

'Tis just weird.

I did "depmod -a"
I commented out the SCSI part of /etc/modules.conf

What else should I try?

you must have had something go wrong when you recompiled your kernel.

more specifically the step where you make modules and make modules_install

Sounds like a mis-matched module/driver of some sort, recompile and select all drivers/modules, to see if the device that it is trying to access works then, you'll know when the warnings go away. Once you know if it had to do with the drivers/modules that were compiled with the kernel, you can rebuild and use trial and error to figure out which it is that needs to be loaded. Follow? What Distro are you using?

HTH,
Mike
