Kernel modules: why are some kernel modules zipped?


Hello!

Why are some kernel modules zipped (.gz) in Slackware Linux?
Which programm does unzip them on need? insmod?

dunno about why they are zipped but .gz is the gzip 's file extension

they are zipped as believe it or not it is quicker to read a small file from a drive and decompress it in memory than it is to read the original decompressed driver. and of course, they are also smaller, which is nice. you don't need to decompress them yourself.
