New Kernel 2.6.6 hangs for no discernable reason

I have been successfully using kernel 2.4.26 (with Slack 9.1) for some time now. I decided it was time to update to 2.6.6. For some reason, my boot hangs every time. The last thing it displays during boot is this:
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: hda: max request size: 128KiB
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: ^Icurrent capacity is 234375000 sectors (120000 MB)
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: ^Inative capacity is 234441648 sectors (120034 MB)
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: hdb: max request size: 128KiB
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM drive, 512kB Cache, UDMA(33)
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: hdd: ATAPI 48X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)

I thought maybe it was fsck-ing the disk or something, so I let it sit for about 3 hours. No luck. I have been trolling around the net for anything that might help, to no avail. I have looked through every log that I could find and nothing seems to stand out as an error that would cause a system hang. I have recompiled the kernel with different options, but all with the same result. I kept my 2.4.26 kernel in place, so I can still boot to that with no problems, but I would like to figure out what is going on here.

Here is the syslog for my (failed) boot:

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, because I am stumped. I can post anything else that might help. I don't even know where the source of the problem is, and I don't want to make you wade through my entire system setup. Thanks for everything (LinuxQuestions is great!)

Now I can't say that I know anything about this (having never seen this particular error before, although I've heard of people having various errors under 2.6.6, which is one reason I'm still running 2.6.5), but I have compiled several 2.6 series kernels, and so let's see if logic gets us any further with this.

Here's what's new to me:
Quote:
kernel: hda: max request size: 128KiB
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: ^Icurrent capacity is 234375000 sectors (120000 MB)
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: ^Inative capacity is 234441648 sectors (120034 MB)
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: hdb: max request size: 128KiB
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM drive, 512kB Cache, UDMA(33)
May 23 20:07:15 Section9 kernel: hdd: ATAPI 48X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)
-- this whole "Section9" business. What the heck is "Section9"? Perhaps a section of the kernel config menu? Let's see.

CD-ing to /usr/src/linux in a root terminal and running make menuconfig... counting down the main menu 9 times takes me to.... File Systems. Which makes sense, so I guess File Systems is "Section9". So what have we got in this section that might be relevant (other than everything)? Nothing on first glance.

Now, my bootlog looks like this:

From this, I can see that all that "max request size" and sector counts are all normal output (since my kernel boots, and yours doesn't, but they both have this output). The fact that you have "Section9 kernel:" before yours and I don't may be something to do with 2.6.6 as opposed to 2.6.5, but at the moment it seems irrelevant to the problem.

So maybe the boot isn't hanging on the drive count-and-mount, but is hanging on what comes after-- which on my system is USB detection. I seem to have heard of a lot of people having problems with 2.6.6 and USB, so that's also making sense.

Do you have any USB devices connected? Does the system boot when they are not connected? Or, if they are not connected, does the system boot when they are? What USB support did you compile into the kernel (either directly or as modules)?

So far, that's all I'm coming up with, but hopefully it's a lead in the right direction.

Can you post your machine specs and config for for the Kernel?

Also, is this a from-scratch 2.6.6 or did you use the old config file?
Did you do anything above and beyond the old config file or just use as is?
Did you use gconfig?
If so, did you read every option before deciding? It has a great summary of each option.
Lastly, did you make install or copy and paste the data into the /boot sector?

I'll look at it for you since I just compiled my 2.6.6 and had to recompile twice to get various things working.

(Sorry, at work right now - will post config file, etc. when I get home)

Let's see, addressing questions....

Section9 is my machine name, so it just prefixes all of that stuff. No real reason except that I have disk space to burn, so why not log it thousands of times?

I thought about the USB being the problem. I checked and rechecked (and will check again later) all of the USB settings, but I have only the most basic USB support enabled (compiled into the kernel - not as a module). One part of the cable for my wireless receiver (for my keyboard and mouse) plugs in to the USB port, the other into the keyboard port, so I figured I needed at least some basic USB support, but nothing fancy. My 2.4 kernel had no problems with this setup - but it was just vanilla kernel, so maybe there is something included with (or missing from) the kernel on the slack cd that I failed to enable. Is there any way to get the config file for the default kernel that ships with the cd? I checked my hd, but I couldn't locate anything like that. Perhaps I will do some searching for that today.

Anyway, this is my first kernel compile, so I am not using an old config file, just straight menuconfig. This being my first time, I have spent hours online looking into all of the settings and deciding whether or not I needed it (took me forever to figure out why my ATI Radeon wasn't working properly, but that at least is fixed now). Frankly, I don't mind having to spend so much time reading about that stuff. I seriously have a good time at it (that is why I switched to Slack). Anyway, thanks for your help, sorry I couldn't post more info (as soon as I get back to the machine).

Some machine specs:

Pentium 4 - 2.3Ghz (or some large number in that area)
512Mb RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 - Dual monitor setup
Creative SbLive (the silly dell version with the diff chipset, does not work with ALSA - emu101k)
Dual boot Slack 9.1 (kernel 2.4.26 and trying for 2.6.6) and Windows XP on separate hd's.
48x DVD drive and 48x CDRW drive
I am sure there is other important info that I am forgetting (I have the specs for too many machines rattling around up there and, as a result, I can't even remember one of them perfectly).

hmmmm, right off the bat, I see that you have a single processor machine and it looks like SMP is trying to start. Did you compile SMP into the Kernel? You should do this only if you have multiple processors.

You don't have to search; you only have to turn on "Show hidden files" in your file manager of choice . The .config is either in /usr/src/old_kernel_version (not /usr/src/linux, as that should be a symlink to the current kernel that you just compiled), or in /boot, probably as .config.old

I'm wondering if USB shouldn't be a module. For one thing, I have it as a module, and it works fine. For another thing, I've seen other former modules (most notably ALSA, second only to the ide-scsi=>ide-cd issue) be kind of a PITA when compiled directly into the kernel (as ALSA now is-- and though it works, I always get "no soundcard detected" errors at the beginning of the boot sequence, until the soundcard is loaded at the end of the boot sequence). While generally the troublesome former-modules-now-directly-compiled are not major issues, USB most certainly is, and maybe it doesn't play well when directly compiled like that.

Just something to consider on the way home from work .

Turn off ACPI in the kernel config and recompile your kernel, worked for me. It would always hang at the IDE detection and say interrupt lost and the same thing hdb: max request size: 128KiB. and it would say hdb: interrupt lost. I beleive that ACPI is the problem.. Try turning that off in your kernel config options and recompile.

Great idea Mint567 but I wouldn't turn ACPI off and recompile yet. This is a drastic step if you aren't going to recompile for any other reason. In LILO, you can add an append line--->

append = "pci=noacpi"
and it will do the same thing. I had to do this because mine hung up and the error was

"hdc: lost interrupt"

This does not appear to be the same problem but try the append line to see.

Thank you for all of your replies. I must admit, I am chomping at the bit now to get home and try them out. Now I have some direction to move in. Hopefully all will be up and running soon. Thanks

Ok. I hit the same wall. I recompiled with USB as a module and the sound system (OSS) as a module and I turned off SMP (I guess I boffed the setup on that one). I popped the append="pci=noacpi" line into lilo. All of it gets me no progress. It stalls at the exact same point. (and, yes, I did them each independently, just to be rigorous about this whole thing). Here you go with my current Syslog: (and I will stick my .config in the next post - too long to post here)

Ha! I have bested this kernel! Thank you for all of your help. When nothing I tried worked, I unchecked some of the "EXPERIMENTAL" options. I don't remember checking some of them, and they seemed rather harmless at the time, but I believe that specifically the one marked Dual Head mode was, for some reason checked. I am pretty sure that was the only option I changed to get it to work. Sorry it took me so long to report it, but I had to deal with my mouse not working for a while there (that is fixed too). Thanks again for all of your help.
