the problematic stick, is it a Samsung flash drive, yes?
it clearly shows up in dmesg, and there do not seem to be any problems with it.
no clue why it doesn't show up in fdisk.
you can also try
Code:
sudo lsusb -v
you can also try booting some Other distro, something normal and unencrypted. maybe that has sth to do with it.
tthough i wouldn't rule out a PEBKAC either.

yes it is the samsung drive. there are two of them. one works and is encrypted which is what Im booting tails from now and the other which doesnt work and can only be seen by some terminal commands. the drives themselves are not encrypted as you can boot tails without the password but to get to the information i need you would have tp use the password to unlock the persistent part of the OS
do you have a different means to plug that into someone else's or a different PC/Laptop to see if it will work in theirs , or the other one? that'd help give you some insight to that stick too.

Yes, I have tried the two USB ports on this apple laptop and 3 usb ports on a brand new 27" iMac. Same thing its not recognized and the only time it is even acknowledged is when doing certain terminal commands that shows it exists. it just wont work in the file browser/explorer or disk utility stuff

well it's up to you to figure out which is which.
looks like hardware failure to me, but then i'm not the one sitting at the computer doing things, i can only judge from what info you provide.
it seems you are confused because of too many usb sticks plugged into your machine or something.

I can now how Linux booted in parallels so no usb needed so the only USB needed plugged in would be the faulty one.
Im putting a bounty on this. anyone willing to help out and get this drive working so that I can get my important docs off, Im willing to give $15. I know its not much but its all I can really spare. If I have to, Im willing to even let you remotely control my system to make it easier than this step by step guide. any takers confident enough to get this going.
Its crazy though. when parallels is on and you hook up a usb stick it asks which system you want the stick to go for, but no matter which system I choose, neither one of them even see the stick after that lol

Just for info, that's not how LQ works (neither the payment nor the remote control). All advice is freely given on a volunteer basis and is made available to everybody who reads the site both now and in the future. If you don't obtain the solution you require here and wish to pay for it then I would advise you to look at paying a professional or use a site that employs bounties. In saying that, however, I hope that someone here will be able to help you.
I wish I could help you out for free, back up files, especially important ones, take it to a store and try windows on it, just to see what windows says if it even recognizes it. If it is that important to you. me and the other have pretty much exhausted out resources.
Yes I just have hope maybe a little too optimistic. Its clearly recognized and seen like when plugging into a computer with parallels it asks which system it wants me to associate the drive with. but none of the file finders or disk utilities can pick up on the drive smh. its only seen in terminal when doing certain commands . its a sad sad day. its like having money in the bank vault but you dont have the combination/key/or ID to get into your safety deposit box.
