multiseat with one keyboard/mouse

I've seen a couple threads on this topic, but nothing recent or definitive: I'm on Xubuntu (Raring) using gdmflexiserver to run two accounts simultaneously (ctrl-alt F7/F8 toggles between them). I just upgraded my video to an Nvidia Geforce and would like to run dual monitors, one for each account. In the setup I imagine, ctrl-alt F7/F8 would determine which one received keyboard/mouse input at a given moment. The Nvidia control panel allows each monitor a separate X session, but I can't figure how to establish separate logins. Right now, gdmflexiserver (or "Switch User" from the menu) causes both monitors to change accounts together, which obviously isn't what I want.

So far, I've seen a couple (possibly dated) suggestions about re-mapping one of the virtual terminals to the second monitor's frame buffer (forgive me if I'm not stating this correctly; it's a little over my head), but none of the mentioned utilities are packaged with Ubuntu any longer, and it seems there may be stability issues with this approach. I've also seen it recommended that one configure xorg.conf for multiple screens, but I think this entails assigning separate input devices for each, which isn't what I'm after. I'd really hoped that gdmflexiserver would have option for redirecting i/o, but I haven't seen any evidence of it....

This is a much tougher problem than I was expecting; any advice would be much appreciated!

[EDIT - I should mention that I'm looking to do this without Xnest/Xephyr]

Would it be possible for me to assign the second monitor a different display number in xorg.conf, and then run startx :1? Am I at least barking up the right tree?
