Modem Question

Greetings,

Very general modem question from a newbie:

I have an XP/Mepis dual boot. I bought a Hornet 56k external serial modem to use with both Windows and Linux. Even though it is rated 56k it never connects faster than 28k in either OS. The winmodem in Windows usually connects at 40+k. Can anyone explain why the serial modem is always so slow?

-Thanks

For normal telephone data-connections: They aren't. I know modems (serial), who are as fast as the indication (56k) on the device tells me.

It's more about the chipset the modem uses and/or the driver in use.

I don't know that much about this but it also has to do with the type and protocoll being used by the modem or modem bank you are calling in to.
try using some init strings to use older protocolls and see if it helps

Other then first checking that your serial port is actually high speed ie: 16550AFN chip (not really an issue with newer systems) I would agree with foo, that it's probably and init string problem and maybe your V.90 protocol is not being implimented. do some searches on init strings for your modem and particular ISP... The is most likely a combination that will yield over 28.8
