For some reason, the words Redmond and 1 Microsoft Way spring to mind...

Some major points to keep in mind here
1.) Even IF Micro$oft decides to port some applications to linux, you will be guranteed that it will be both: closed source, and not free!
2.) Given Microsoft's notorious history of buggy software, I don't think Microsoft will succeed at all if they take up such a project. For example, it is HOPELESS for them to port IE Since Netscape/Mozilla have dominated the linux feild there.
End Result: Too Little Too Late
3.) Microsoft will continue in its battle to not accept current standards. Next thing you know is we'll have MSFS (Microsoft FileSystem) for linux, with built-in Spyware capabilities, LOL
4.) Microsoft is a Corporation. Meaning its all about the $. If they're gonna step foot into this, they better make sure there is a huge cash ($$$) reward in it
