Hi I have the solution now.
The problem is that aMSN is a tcl/tk application and tcl/tk can't use antialiased fonts. What you have to do is use the unstable versions of tcl and tk. Instructions <a href="http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=188536">here</a>. You might need to change the commands a bit for your distribution... these instructions are for Gentoo.

That would explain why I've had luck with them on my box, as I have been running "testing" all along (never stayed with stable branches of any distro/OS for long). You'll notice the "tilde"in my sig to the left.
