MDK9.0 REALLY SLOW and Hangs

hi to everyone,

any suggestion to fix the two problems told above?

1) once booted mandrake works really slow, (just confronted with windowsXP), web navigation is slow and other processes the same.

2) it happends quite often that OS hangs while doing three or more thigs, like harddrake+kate+konqueror+some other stuffs.

You may have some servers and other un-necessary services running. You have quite a few options. Look into trying out different window managers/desktop environments such as XFCE or Openbox. Check your services (probably with some kick ass mandrake tool in the Mandrake Control Center) and stop the ones you don't need; that also pertains to servers. Other options include rebuilding your kernel to include only the things you need; building your programs from tarballs to further optimize them for your processor; running faster alternatives to the programs you currently use; increasing your amount of system RAM, or your CPU speed; enabling hdparm on your hard drive (man hdparm); and the list goes on

You will probably see an amazing speed increase though just by switching to a faster desktop environment. Like I said above, give something like XFCE or OpenBox/Fluxbox a try.

Cool

You'll have to look somewhere besides "MDK9.0 REALLY SLOW and Hangs" because:

It isn't Mandrake

You can probably unload any web servers that are starting (httpd)...

How's about you tell us what's enabled, and also a good "guess" on what you will be using your linux box for (for the next little while at least) and then we can suggest what to turn off It'd be easier for the both of us that way

And thanks for clarifying that for me KayJay

Really quick, since you didn't say what you will be using linux for (at least for the next little while) I'll show you what I'd turn off if I wasn't running a server.

I'd also probably turn off dm and fam, simply because I don't know what they are. And from there I'd go one by one. Turn off a service once every other day or so, and run your box as your normally do. If you have lost functionality in anything in that day and a half, turn the service back on, and proceed to the next. Long process, but sometimes it might be worth it (you may find that resource hog). I'd also probably shutoff internet and see what happens since I am not sure what that is exactly for.

Cool

Had the same problem. Dont use kde. Kde 3.0 from my experience multitasks on a level with windows 3.1 but uses about a hundred times more processor and memory to do it.

Probably kheader did that. You might look into re-enabling that. To get into a "gui" from a command prompt, type "startx".
