man md5sum

md5sum takes a file and outputs a string of Hex digit's
corresponding to that and only that file.
it's used to check integrity of a file. for example
if you wanted to check if someone changed a certain file
you compare the checksum (the junk the prog' outputs)
to the checksum of a previous date. if both aren't the same
then you know the file was changed .
