Manaing ftp/ssh users

I want an environment where i can add users and they can have access to ftp and ssh, but where i can choose whether they can have one or the other or both.

im using openssh and proftpd. I read about 'virtual' users for ftp, wouldnt that get messy, one method of adding users for ssh and another for ftp.

I though about using gruops, eg users in ftp can access ftp and users in ssh can access ssh, but how can i get openssh and proftp to check access depending on groups?

Im really confused, how do you do it?

Well, you could set up a couple new groups, ftponly and sshonly, and assign new users to either those or leave them as users. Then set up ssh to allow both users and sshonly group and proftpd to allow users and ftponly groups. For proftpd, check out the AllowGroup directive. OpenSSH has a similar system.
