Making a linux multi-media station

This is my plan:
Convert all my dvds to divx to save space, Convert all my cds to mp3, Set up a pictures photo album and store on a big harddrive. I wish to use a Linux system with tv out to do this.
I have a Nvidia tv-out card and a spare linux box (quite powerfull specs) what distro should i use (i know gentoo quite well). Has anyone else tried this?

any distro is fine. for the actual multimedia software, have a look at freevo, mythtv and geexbox among others.

I foresee a few late nights coming up if my resent experience with xorg.conf has anything to go by
