Little slow on login

I just installed kubuntu 9.04 yesterday and everything is fine except when I login it shows the background for a little in black and white then after a little it shows the desktop. Is there anyway I can speed this up?

Don't run it on a system that is so old

Serious, what I'm trying to say is that your post is missing a crucial detail and that is a description of the hardware that it is running on. If that is indeed something that was top of the range in the mid 90s, it might not really be suitable for nowadays distros with KDE and/or Gnome.

1 GB memory and 2.6 ghz intel processor sounds good enough to me. I run Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD3000+ with 1GB and an elcheapo nvidia 6200 card and have not observed your problem.

Will not be able to help further.
