Slow login

The first time I login after boot it takes gdm about 5 minutes before it starts up Gnome. When I log in without X it also takes about 5 minutes to log me in (unless I log in as root for some weird reason). Anyway, after the first login it's al fast again. Any idea's how I can fix this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

user.log when logging in:

It may be as simple as binding your hostname to localhost. Before trying any exhaustive fixes, fisrt try this...

Let's assume your hostname is host.example.com

In the /etc/hosts file make an entry like this...

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost host1.example.com host1

Then make sure the file that declares your hostname is set. On SuSe that would be the /etc/HOSTNAME file On Red Hat that is /etc/sysconfig/network
I don't remember where debian sets it.

If you dont want to reboot, also type
hostname host1.example.com
log out and relog in.
Then try to startx

I may be way off for your problem, but it is definately a good starting point

That didn't work. No change. Thanks for the reply though. If I can't resolve it before I get home from work (In the Netherlands, it's 9 am now), I'll just reinstall Mandrake. Too bad I can't install Gnome 2.6 with rpm's without using Cooker ftp's. This is the third time Cooker destroys my Linux install.
