Linux-Windows file sharing

Hi

I was wondering if it is possible to write from Windows to ResierFS (not to any other filesystem).

Also, what exactly does the Samba server running on linux allow me to do? I know it allows me to share files and printers with windows, but does it allow windows to write on linux (with ReiserFS) or just read from linux?

Thanks

You can't even read from Winders to Linux, much less write to it.

Negative on the second question. Samba allows for file sharing,
but Winders is broken and blind when it comes to *nix filesystems.

The one filesystem that both windows and linux can read/write easily is fat32. I have a shared chunk which is fat32 for the sake of moving stuff from one to the other (others have too). Samba is good across a network, but a single machine can only boot one OS at a time (well, usually).

Windows is totally blind to non-native file systems, which is pretty hopeless IMO.

Then what is Samba used for? I mean, what does file sharing mean then if Windows can neither read nor read from Linux.

NOTE: What if it is across a network, with one computer on WinXP and other with Linux/ReiserFS. Then is it possible for the Winodws to read/write?

thanks

With Samba Windows can write to a ReiserFS machine on the network, but at the same machine, you must use FAT32 if you want to share files between the OS'es.

Objorkum, you answered the important question, that Windows can write to ResierFS using Samba. But you've created a new question:
What do you mean by sharing of files? I thought 'sharing files' would only include reading and writing between the two computers. In that case these two would obviously be sharing since as you said windows will be able to write to (and i guess read from) linux.

question may sound stupid but has confused me...

thanks

Files can be moved between a linux machine and a windows machine using Samba, regardless of the filesystems being used on each machine. Samba uses the smb protocol.

The point is, you need to be running these two machines simultaneously and they must be networked. If you are dual booting two OS on the one machine, Samba can't help you. In this situation, the fat32 partition is handy.
