Does anyone else feel validated now that Linus Torvalds said that Gnome 3 sucks, and he has had to downgrade to XFCE?

I had used Fedora for years. Now I've had to switch to SL6 to be able to continue using Gnome 2. Because Gnome 3 is so reliant on the mouse and obviously panders to Windows users, not Linux users.

Well I was thinking about posting about this to ask why anyone cares so much? Why do people need all these pointless functions in the first place?? I'm running forced fallback mode, I have a gnome-terminal and chrome icon next to the Places menu... I don't need anything else, and I really doubt other people do either. I don't understand why people feel the need to litter their desktops with crap etc. I was happy using gnome2, and gnome3 is fine too. All the overly emotive language utterly baffles me.

I tried using the forced fallback mode, but found it lacking quite a bit of the usability that made Gnome2 so attractive for me. XFCE is the same way.

For now, RHEL6 will continue to use Gnome2. Therefore I will use RHEL6 to keep my unbroken, un-littered Gnome2.

Well, far be it from me to kick a dog that's down already...but Gnome 3 - for all its good features - will loose following because of the system requirements alone. I use a second hand PC with not much of a video card (Intel i915)...Gnome 3 did'nt like it and kicked me into fallback.

I think the makers of Gnome 3 kinda lost sight of what Linux really is: an OS for everyone, even those with lesser specs.

But, of the up side, I'm convinced Linus will like XFCE. And, if he runs into trouble, he's always welcome here...we'll help ' out...

Yeah, if Linus needs help, I will totally give him a tutorial on how to use Linux.

Gnome 3 is definitely a resource hog. And for what really? A layered desktop like that shouldn't need that many resources. And that scares me, because what I've come to expect from the X world is a streamlined desktop system... (although its had its issues) whereas Gnome 3 is feeling bloated like Windows().

And on top of that... X is built on top of Linux/Bash which is a CLI. So, I expect a GUI that sticks close to the keyboard and doesn't require constant use of the mouse. Thats just me though. But, Gnome3 is surely not keyboard friendly out of the box.

Sorry, good catch. XFCE is certainly not a "downgrade" from Gnome. Its simply a different manager. I was sort of thinking in terms of userbase... not performance or usability. :P

Linus was originally a KDE user, but he switched to Gnome because he didn't like KDE4. Looking at KDE4 and Gnome3, there does seem to be a general pattern. I hope Xfce will remain immune; otherwise, I started with Icewm and may have to end up with it.

Am I wrong to recall that the desktop (any desktop) has to "merely" provide a graphical shell around the text-based system below but NOT enhace on it? If memory serves, that's what I read in one of the first books on Linux...

I remember that KDE4 was not accepted at first. And I believe I remember reading that Torvalds switched to Gnome2 because of the changes in KDE.

Which really sucks for him -- the father of Linux, because he just wants to use a simple, nice window manager for linux, and they keep changing it on him. What he should do in retaliation is completely change the kernel to BASIC and tell Gnome and KDE "Well, we made the changes to appeal to a larger user base, blah blah blah. Sorry it doesn't work for you."

Well I tried running XFCE, and it just felt like a slightly uglier version of Gnome and not much else. I thought "Yeah! Let's stick it to the man and finally try it out!" and I did, and found no reason to bother using it at all.

The only good gnomes are the ones in peoples' gardens.

I did the same thing, for the same reason. But I have to admit that I found XFCE lacking in the graphics department,.. and the "out of the box" program department. I had grown so used to gnome that I had a hard time accepting such a featureless WM.
