linux telephony

VoIP is great and i have no problem with that, but I'd also like to use my computer as a regular standard telephone. I figure if a little plastic box with 10 digits on it can handle analogue telephony, my computer should be able to manage. Unfortunately, apart from getting a voice modem and plugging it into my phone socket, I don't have a clue how to do it. Any ideas?
