Linux on Windows 8 PCs: Some progress, but still a nuisance

Hi,

Linux on Windows 8 PCs: Some progress, but still a nuisance;
Quote:
Summary: Some Samsung laptops with UEFI will brick when you try to install Linux on them, others have problems, and the Linux Foundation is continuing to try to bring its fix for Windows 8 UEFI Secure Boot out.

Getting Linux to boot and install on PCs locked down with Windows 8's UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot continues to be annoying at best and downright impossible in some cases. Still, slowly, ever so slowly, progress is being made.

It just kills me when people laugh at windows 8. It wasnt about a new version of windows, it was about uefi. MS isnt stupid, just diabolical.

Umm...not really diabolical...more like...desperate. Have you seen what happened with dell? Simple. They grab a hold of a PC hardware platform, hope to seal themselves in and survive the downfall of locked-in software. Sad, just like in those horror movies where they tape of the doors and windows while the monster is in fact already inside

Edit : there have always been devices where a Linux install was/is (will be) a pain in the *** - on the other hand, dell delivers Linux pre-installed servers. Ya really think it's gonna kick that (emerging) market?
More edit : (I'm on the roll here)

Quote:
Secure boot doesn’t “lock out” operating system loaders, but is a policy that allows firmware to validate authenticity of components
And...there is a solution:

Quote:
1) Buy bare metal. If you buy a bare metal machine without the Microsoft tax than this isn't going to be an issue.
from Red Hat engineers themselves. I always built my PC's, then I went to second-hands (save the planet one PC at a time...)

From a page somewhere...

And, by the way, is'nt there a replacement for the BIOS?

Hi,

Dell is going private! Reasons seem to be control of their platforms and the use of therefore hopefully control in the future.

...in one word : desparate. But, a safe move too, once on the stock market, you're vulnerable to all sorts of ***
It's writing on the wall though that ***soft joined in...locked-in has had its days...I think...

And...by the way (been thinking last nite...) Linux is a MARKET now, you really think the industry is going to even allow someone to lock-in their market? A sizable portion of the Internet lives on Linux...

The dinosaurs are still around, but they're smaller now, and far less of a nuisance it's evolution...
