Linux Kernel 3.0 is HERE!!

Linux Kernel 3.0 was just released So what do you guys think ?? Whats going on with the new kernel? Do you think it's going to be on any distro's this year? Is this gonna be like the transition from 2.4 to 2.6?

For more info on Kernel 3.0 http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_3.0

Linus was pretty eager to downplay the significance of it. It's just "time for a new number", there are no massive upheavals like there were on 2.4 to 2.6.

You'd have to download and compile it. Here's Eric's tutorial on building a kernel on Slackware

Running 3.0 here as I was revising my automatic build-and-install-a-kernel-for-me-script to work with the new 3 qualifier version numbering scheme.

Had a segfault from ogg123
Code:
ogg123[2447]: segfault at 7f8a5c045000 ip 00007f8a6242ca70 sp 00007fff51a85d60 error 4 in libasound.so.2.0.0[7f8a623be000+e9000]
If it happens again, I'll take a look at rebuilding alsalib as it looks like libasound is involved and see if that helps.

Will probably stick with 2.6.39.y for a little while longer though to give things time to settle.
3.0 is really only 2.6.40 under a different numbering scheme, so there's no need to rush.
