Linux freezes and locks all consoles... but SSH works


I'm running a modified linux from scratch/Beyond linux from scratch system. I recently upgraded to the 2.6.8.1 kernel, started a shoutcast server, running ColdFusion developer edition, and Apache. I don't know how many of hose are relevant to my problem, but when i'm in X (4.4.0) after a few minutes my computer freezes. sometimes I don't have a mouse, sometimes I have a mouse that won't click anything. I also can't get to any text consoles, but the wierd thing is that I can go to another computer on the network and SSH in to safely reboot or restart GDM. if I restart GDM all of my consoles are still broken but X restarts. I've checked dmesg and /var/log/* I can't find any log output that indicates what the problem is. does anyone know where I may find a log of whats going on or is there a way to find out of one of the processes is causing a problem. thank you in advance for your help.

i've heard other people talk about this
the only think i can think of is either memory settings like highmem are wrong
or someting in the kernel is conflicting with the video drivers
what kind of video card ????
i guess lets look at the XFree86 log there must be a clue in there
possibly post XFree config as well
if you are using nVidia try just the nv driver and see if it works


sometimes i wonder if there are any ramification of not switching to the new dynamic /dev (udev) filesystem thingy with these new kernels -- any thoughts ????

I have a nVidia GeforceFX 5200 and after this problem started I upgraded my drivers to 61.11. because I run a custom kernel I have to compile the drivers myself and use CC=/opt/gcc-2.95.3/bin/gcc. Where I can find the highmem option you mentioned? As soon as my computer froze I went to another computer and used SSH to get in and made a backup of everything in /var/log/*. I'm going to post my XFree86 log and the last hour on my kern log. let me know if you think any other logs may be usefull. the other files are: XFree86.0.log
