I have on Red Hat 7.1 two users (one of which is root and another mike). When I login as a root I have on my KDE Desktop the root Desktop. Than I changed on the terminal from root to mike. But I still have the root Desktop. So my question is how can I change the Desktop from root Desktop to mike Desktop. I know that I have to logout and login, but maybe is anoher way to do thatthe Desktop
then, after logging as a different user, type this at the command line:
startx -- :1
that'll start a new xsession at that virtual console. to get back to your original, type ctl+alt+F7
(also, you can open multiple xsession, just type :2, :3. etc. plus, I usually start a new x session with a lower color depth, so as not to strain my video card - like so:
Personally I wouldn't log in as root unless absolutely neccesary. Log in as Mike and then su root as and when you need to.
As for the startx -- :1 thing, I found that it is sometimes a little suspect...when I need to have more than one user logged in with a GUI, I would:
<ctrl>+<alt>+<f2>, log in as root, type gdm which brings up the Gnome Login Manager, and use that. It seems a bit of a roundabout way, but sometimes with the other method (startx -- :1) switching between GUIs messes things up...gdm seems to keep an eye on which screen is using which gui.
