libata.h 2.6.14

Dear Friends,

Latitude d810 laptop, sata/atapi

I have noticed that in the distros using the 2.6.14 kernel, I am unable to install from the dvd drive on my laptop.

On my .13 kernel,

Code:
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: ATA Model: HTS726060M9AT00 Rev: MH4O
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: _NEC Model: DVD+-RW ND-6500A Rev: 203D
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05
Now, neither slack nor arch will install, for I suspect the same reason, that has something to do with the loaded kernel not seeing the cdrom, just as one cannot install debian with the 2.6 kernel as the installer kernel.

Now, in my working distro, libranet, a debian derivative, I cannot get the 2.6.14 kernel to enable direct read or dma on the dvd drive, as the old trick of defining atapi in the libata.h in gone, as the line is no longer there. I presumed, obviously incorrectly, that, since the line is no longer there, there is another kernel module that sets up the scsi support needed. I am, however, clearly wrong, as this does not work.

What is the status of sata/atapi support, and is there a different workaround now, or am I missing someting in the kernel config that I do not see?

Best wishes,

Martin
