Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question SATA + libata + spindown

Quite simply I'm looking for the libata/serial ata answer to hdparm -S since it doesn't work on sata (SCSI) drives. I just want to make my new SATA drives spindown after a certain interval of inactivity.

Snippet from the man page:
-S Set the standby (spindown) timeout for the drive. This value is used by the drive to determine how long to wait (with no disk activity) before turning off the spindle motor to save power. (snip)
Something similar to this would be very nice.

I'm looking for the same. When I try to use hdparm
hdparm -S 240 /dev/sda
there is an error message
bash-3.00# hdparm -S 240 /dev/sda

setting standby to 240 (20 minutes)
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(setidle1) failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Is there any way how to force SATA disks to stand-by with Linux? Thank you for answer.
