Alright here's the deal, I am doing a little experiment with Fedora Core at the moment. The basis of the experiment is to see just how powerfule and fast Fedora Core can be. I notice everyone talks about how fast Slack is(which it is, I've used it myself) and how bloated SuSe and Red Hat have become. So I am doing a little test to see if I can design a method for people who have a feel for Linux and now want to take it to the next level (people like me).

So right now, I have successfully made a stripped down build that allows to speed and flexibility in installing. The main way I have been doing this is through apt-get, I have basically been using it like gentoo's Portage.

The Good: When I use Apt to get KDE it downloads and installs is just fine. It brings down just the basics to get it up and running, and run it does! I swear to you I have never seen KDE load so fast on Fedora Core before, I would say its comparable to Slackware's load tiem on my machine.

The Bad: The build of KDE Apt brings down is not pure. It still has bluecurve imbedded in it. and while I suppose there maybe no difference between the two, I will never know for sure unless I am able to run a PURE build of KDE, and second I don't want Red Hats version. I want to use it straight from the KDE website (I think).

So where do you come in? Well I am struggling to figure out how to compile KDE. There isn't an RPM for Red Hat on the site (then again that may be a good thing) and the tar.gz2 files aren't working. I guess I am doing something wrong but I can't figure out what. I have been following the Install guide about how to do this.

What files are needed? Just the kdebase and kdelib tar's?

When you change versions of KDE you also need to change versions of Qt. In your case you probably are recompiling the same version of KDE as Fedora supplied, so you would not need to recompile Qt for version compatibility. But Red Hat may have made changes to Qt as part of their Bluecurve changes to KDE. So you may have to recompile Qt also.

If you get a Bluecurve free version of KDE that runs on Fedora please post it some place where I can find it. I have disliked Bluecurve from the instant that I installed it and would like to get rid of it.

In the end that is the goal behind my project. The people I intend to look at my post are not going to fit int he Bluecurve demographic, rather they are going to be people who have gotten a feel for Linux and are ready to move on a bit, and start learning about what it takes to compile these programs that the installer does for you.

It will also make the system as a whole run a lot smoother.
