you can't really install programs in knoppix, unless you
install it to the hard drive. you can save some settings
to a floppy disk or whatever, but thats about it, unless
you want to rebuild the knoppix cdrom.
by the way, knoppix works great.
Yes, but it's beyond the scope of what Knoppix was designed for. You could do it, but it would take a significant ammount of redesigning to make it happen.
You're better off just using knoppix as-is and learning about Linux. When you get a computer of your own to install linux on, do it.

there is a script in knoppix for installing to the hard
drive, but i forgot the name of it. i found it. knx-hdinstall.
i've seen 2 faq's on the web about installing knoppix
to the hard drive. One of them is on the knoppix website.
i've got the knoppix cdrom extracted onto my harddrive,
and scripts to rebuild it. mostly i just add newer versions
of acidrip and Video::dvdrip, transcode and mplayer,
f-prot, and some mp3's, and a bunch of scripts to set
up knoppix the way i want.
couldn't you try making a little, unnoticed linux partition, try mounting that partition and just save the stuff to that so you wouldn't install the 700mb os?
The new version of knoppix released a couple of days ago will allow you to create a home directory on an arbitrary block device. That'll give you the best of both worlds. Won't piss off dad, but you get to use linux.
KNOPPIX-V3.2-2003-03-28-EN.iso is the file you want to download. If it takes too long to download you can buy the CD online for about US$5 and have it mailed to you.
Well last night I had knoppix running and I thought, why not. I will probably put debian on but I have to go get the isos. Knoppix is good for a CD based distro but I have some problems when it is installed such as autologging in as root sometimes. That might be good that is it has a steep learning curve because then I might be forced to learn, not like in mandrake 9.1 where every is very easy to use. Hopfully networking and wine will be just as easy. Wine is preinstalled and I installed LinNeighborhood and I am on the network. Well I'm heading off to Linuxiso. If knoppix is debian based it should be about the same.
I have Knoppix 3.2 and really like it. However, the Dial-up fails on a internet anytime account (UK BT) but not with any Pay-as-you-go.
I've logged the problem and it seems that there is a problem opening the resolv.conf file. The dialler connects ok though but I get redirected to an authorisation failed page.
