just edit your /etc/inittab file to start in multiuser w/networking mode instead of graphical mode. usually runlevel 3 is what you would want instead of 5. just look at your inittab file and it will describe the runlevels for you.

The line trickykid is referring to in /etc/inittab is:
id:5:initdefault:

As he said, changing the 5 to a 3 should do it.

sorry my question wasnt very clear...

i am using a graphical login using xdm. this is not the problem. the problem is that xdm starts a program called xconsole. after i have loged in it still runs in what ever window manger im using and it drives me mad. My question is who can i kill xconsole when i log in so i dont have to close it manually.

cheers
