kernel patches?

I was looking at kernel.org and i have a number of questions about the kernel patches they have there.

A) in the mirror they have "kernel-verson.tar.bz2", they also have "patch-version.bz2", im assuming that these patches are to bring an older kernel up to date. but are the patches suposed to be applied to 2.4.0, or 2.4.--previos version--?

B) how do I apply the patch from kernel.org

C) this question is about naming conventions. for the preatches theres two types; theres -rc# and -pre#. whats the difference?

A) The patch files bring the previous version up to the next version.

B) Use the scripts/patch-kernel script that comes with the kernel to apply the patches.

C) -rc is release candidate. These are just early looks at a given patch or release so that people can test with before a final patch is done.

cd into your kernel directory and use patch -p1 < patchname
