i've been messing around with linux for a good two years off and on, i have a relatively good understanding of it, alas. i have never SUCCESSFULLY recompiled my kernel. i was hoping someone could shed some light on my problem here's a brief explanation of what happens:
I download and gunzip and tar.
i do all the nessicary commands and configure the kernel as to what i need.
i copy the boot image to the boot sector.
Setup lilo.
reboot. choose the new kernel
Here's where the problem is, i never get any errors before this point:
after that, it has never uncompressed the kernel, it will just hang. and i will have to turn if off manually and boot back into my old kernel. has anyone got any ideas as to why this occurs?
It can be lots of things, I suggest get an already defined config file, let's say from http://linuxjunior.org/cgi-bin/pet/p...T=Display&id=9 a person who wrote this HOW-TO is a member here as well pbharris here is his profile http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...fo&userid=1959
Follow the steps in the how-to, and you should be fine, just adjust config to reflect your setup (processor type, usb support, etc)
What are the specs of your system?
If you provide this information you'd get one or more usefull suggestions.
