Kernel 2.6 hitting the mainstream?

So, when will a distro appear with the kernel 2.6?

I REALLY want to try linux on my laptop with this new kernel. Are there any plans for that to happen in the near future?

Kernel 2.6 has only just come out. It now needs to go through testing and then the new cds have to be pressed, boxed sets made, etc etc. Probably quicker from your point of view to simply install the new kernel in your current distro.

How about a little wager on who's first. Lets say they have to be listed by www.linux.org as a Mainstream/GeneralPublic distribution. Hear are a few.

Fedora
Suse
Mandrake
Slackware
Debian
Gentoo
Lindows
Lycoris
Turbo

I say it will be Mandrake. They release often and frequently and they have had 2.6.0 in the cooker for awhile.

This is interesting! Does this rpm package mean that i can install kernel 2.6 without having to compile it??

Yes it does, but you shouldn't really do that. Compiling the kernel is something you should probably learn, and although it seems daunting at first, once you've done it a few times it becomes almost routine.

How did it fail? I've had no problems compiling 2.6-test or 2.6.0, and full ACPI support is indeed quite lovely

Nope! Since it is a pre-compiled kernel you get what whoever compiled the kernel wants you to have. So if they want you to have ACPI then you get it.

Since it is comming from RedHat and they are famous for not including NTFS you should look for a 2.6.0 NTFS rpm if you need NTFS.
