Question Kernel 2.6.1 versus rc.sysinit

Am running RH9--with errata applied--on an AMD SMP box. In using xconfig to configure a 2.6.1 kernel build, in the section "USB Support", I've selected printer, usb device filesystem, and usb mass storage support, with no human interface device support at all. During boot, while running rc.sysinit, grep complains about the file /proc/bus/usb/drivers not existing, then attempts to initialize the HID (human interface device) driver, then attempts to initialize a usb mouse and a usb keyboard. The usb mouse and keyboard drivers are "mousedev" and "keybdev", respectively. These attempts end in [Failed] messages because not only does /proc/bus/usb/drivers not exist, but the driver hid has not been built, and neither mousedev nor keybdev appear to be present in the 2.6.1 build tree. It also appears that there is no xconfig option to configure or not configure a usb mouse or keyboard.

I'm not sure who owns rc.sysinit, but it appears a new one might be needed for 2.6 (unless I'm missing something). I'm also wondering whether the 2.6.1 .config file might need options to build or not build a mouse and keyboard in the usb hid section.

Any suggestions?

the usb module has changed in the new kernel, so you could be having this problem ...

By following your references (and several layers deep) I came upon this in http://www.fearthecow.net/index.pl?s...st&page=kernel

USB:

As I compiled USB support into the kernel, I just commented out the USB module loading section in /etc/rc.sysinit However, if you'd like to use modules, which would probably be best, I suggest that you see Thomer Gil's 2.6.0-test2 page

The above Thomer Gil's 2.6.0-test2 page includes a listing of a modified rc.sysinit that accomodates changes in the usb module names for 2.6.

I'm very glad to have had your help, DrOzz. I thought I must be going crazy dealing with problems that no one else seemed to be having. Apparently what I've experienced will trip up just about anyone trying to migrate from RH9.
