KDE startup failure - blue and white screen flash

I'm having problems with KDE 3.0 on RH7.3. If I login to KDE all I get is a blue screen for ~1sec, then a white screen ~1sec, alternating forever! To make things worse the system log doesn't record any errors... This problem randomly appeared 2 days ago and I solved it by reinstalling RH, but today its back! Gnome works fine so I'm a little confused. Please help.

Found a bit more info comparing yesterday's startup log to todays. From what I can gather this is where is all went bad:

kernel: apm: busy: unable to enter requested state
network: shutting down interface eth0: succeeded
network: shutting down loopback interface: succeeded
/etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not supported
apmd[916]: user suspended
